Faciobrachio-crural dystonic seizures in LGI1 limbic encephalitis: A treatable cause of falls
نویسندگان
چکیده
Faciobrachial dystonic seizures (FBDS) are closely associated with antibodies (Ab) to the leucine-rich glioma inactivated-1 protein (LGI1) component of the voltage-gated potassium channel (VGKC) complex. They precede or indicate the onset of limbic encephalitis (LE). Immunotherapy can prevent the development of LE and cognitive impairment. FBDS are very brief, very frequent unilateral dystonic seizure-like events that always affect the arm and commonly affect the ipsilateral face. Involvement of the leg is rare, and little has been reported on so-called faciobrachio-crural dystonic seizures (FBCDS), which are associated with falls as well. Hence, FCBDS are a rare but treatable differential diagnosis of recurrent falls.

Isolated Chorea Associated with LGI1 Antibody
BACKGROUND Leucine-rich glioma inactivated 1 (LGI1) antibody produces a syndrome of limbic encephalitis, hyponatremia, and facio-brachial dystonic seizures that is non-paraneoplastic and responsive to corticosteroids. Parkinsonism, tremor, and generalized chorea are rare manifestations of LGI1, but, when present, commonly accompany other signs of limbic encephalitis. CASE REPORT We present a ...
متن کاملSpontaneous remission without progression to limbic encephalitis in a patient with LGi1 seropositive faciobrachial dystonic seizure
Faciobrachial dystonic seizures are pathognomonic of leucine-rich glioma inactivated-1 (LGi1) antibody, non-paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis. Faciobrachial dystonic seizures usually precede limbic encephalitis by about a month. It is unknown whether, if untreated, faciobrachial dystonic seizures inevitably progress to limbic encephalitis. We present an LGi1 seropositive patient with a year’s ...
متن کاملThe importance of recognizing faciobrachial dystonic seizures in rapidly progressive dementias
Background Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) is the prototypical cause of rapidly progressive dementia (RPD). Nonetheless, efforts to exclude reversible causes of RPD that mimic prion disease are imperative. The recent expanding characterization of neurological syndromes associated with antibodies directed against neuronal cell surface or sympathic antigens, namely autoimmune encephalitis is shif...
متن کاملThe importance of early immunotherapy in patients with faciobrachial dystonic seizures
Faciobrachial dystonic seizures and limbic encephalitis closely associate with antibodies to leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1). Here, we describe 103 consecutive patients with faciobrachial dystonic seizures and LGI1 antibodies to understand clinical, therapeutic and serological differences between those with and without cognitive impairment, and to determine whether cessation of faciobr...

Diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is often challenging in elderly individuals, not only because of its variable clinical features but also because of nonspecific changes on the electroencephalogram (EEG) in the early stages of the disease. Here we report on a patient who presented with progressive cognitive dysfunction, psychiatric symptoms, involuntary facio-brachio-crural movement,...
